These small tank engines were introduced to the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway in 1891 and were to a design by J.A.F.Aspinall. They were built at Horwich over a period of thirty years and finally totalled 57. The LMS sold some of them to private owners between 1931 and 1937, but 23 of them passed to British Railways in 1948. Despite their great age, the last was not withdrawn from service with BR until 1963; two have been preserved at heritage centres. They were built for shunting duties where yards had tight curves - particularly dock areas.

First modelled by Kitmaster in their 00 scale kit range, Dapol produced a ready-to-run working model in 1984. This tooling was sold to Hornby in 1996 and since then Hornby have produced twelve versions of it. The latest is in the earliest finish after Nationalisation and carries the number 51235 (R2927).
