The Tyne & Wear Metro opened in stages between 1980 and 1984 using a mixture of former British Rail routes and new construction. It was the first modern light rail system to be built in Britain. Extensions to Newcastle Airport opened in 1991 and Sunderland in 2002. 90 Metro vehicles were built in 1980. All remain in service
