Shock-absorbing springs, to protect sensitive loads during shunting, were developed in the 1930s by the LMS, SR and GWR and the LNER had started designing their own before Nationalisation. The war stopped further development but new batches of wagons, so fitted, were beginning to appear in the lead up to Nationalisation. Some of the SR design carried a 'B' number prefix. BR continued to build the wagons after Nationalisation, and, after completing inherited orders, they adopted the LMS design to be their standard. The Bachmann model is therefore based on the LMS design. The Blue Riband version of the shock open wagon did not arrive until 2006 and was based on the same wagon design as the earlier model of 1992
