Bachmann FNA Nuclear Flask Wagon
These special 56 ton bogie wagons were designed specifically to move nuclear waste (mainly Magnox), in specially designed sealed flasks, from power stations at Dungerness, Hunterston, Oldbury, etc. to the British Nuclear Fuels (BNF) reprocessing plant at Sellafield in Cumbria They are moved by BNF's own rail operator - Direct Rail Services (DRS). 52 bogie flat wagons were built between 1976 and 1988, some at Ashford and others at Shildon and Swindon. The main batch of 34 were built Procor (UK) Ltd in 1988.
Our review model (38-345) is numbered 550014 (one of the first Ashford batch of 1976) and has a very large '14' painted in black on the top of the white hood which covers the flask. This is so the wagons can easily be tracked from the air.
