These small tank engines were introduced to the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway in 1891 and were to a design by J.A.F.Aspinall. They were built at Horwich over a period of thirty years and finally totalled 57. The LMS sold some of them to private owners between 1931 and 1937, but 23 of them passed to British Railways in 1948. Despite their great age, the last was not withdrawn from service with BR until 1963; two have been preserved at heritage centres. They were built for shunting duties where yards had tight curves - particularly dock areas.

First modelled by Kitmaster in their 00 scale kit range, Dapol produced a ready-to-run working model in 1984. This tooling was sold to Hornby in 1996 and the first Hornby model arrived in 1998. No.51240 is the 12th version of it that they have produced - all but two of them in BR livery.
