The announcement that Hornby planned to produce a series of Gresley non-gangwayed passenger stock was greatly welcomed by the modelling press and the public. True to their word, the new coaches were delivered towards the end of 2011 and were everything modellers hoped for.

There are four types, these being an all 1st, all 3rd, a composite 1st/3rd and a brake 3rd. All four coaches are available in LNER varnished teak livery and BR crimson. The varnished teak finish involves about 100 processes to get the realistic timber affect and this is reflected in a higher price of these coaches. The internal and external detail is exquisite.

The models are based on 51ft 1.5in stock built from 1925 onwards and used mainly for suburban trains around cities in the East of the country. Some non-gangwayed LNER stock was also used on cross-country routes, however, the absence of toilets in non-corridor stock required careful planning by members of the public and the possibility of switching to the composite coach during a station stop.
