Bachmann Midland 'Compound' 31-930NRM4-4-0 MR Compound .JPG (37564 bytes)

Produced initially as a model exclusive to the National Railway Museum (NRM), it is based on the locomotive in the National Collection. It will remain exclusive to the museum for at least three years. The launch party, attended by the model railway press, was held on 5th October, this year, at the NRM.

On the Midland Railway, Johnson's first 'Compound' was introduced in 1902 and modified versions were produced by Deeley in 1905. No.1000, on which the model is based, was from Johnson's original batch and was originally numbered 2631 - being renumbered in 1907. The locos were originally classified as Class 4 but this was later changed to 4P, as their primary function was express and local passenger services. The LMS adopted the Midland 'Compound' as a standard design and building of them continued until 1927, further orders being cancelled by Stanier. Much of their work was later taken over by the 'Jubilee' and 'Black 5' Classes. The last 'Compound' was withdrawn in 1961.

The model, now on sale at the museum is in maroon Midland Railway livery as No.1000 and as the example in the National Collection is finished.
