Hornby RailRoad BR Green Class A1 R30604-6-2 Class A1 BRa Doncaster green.JPG (71843 bytes)

It is no secret that since its arrival in 1968, Hornby's Flying Scotsman has been a major revenue earner for Hornby. When children are asked what train set they would like for Christmas, the answer frequently is "Flying Scotsman". Based on the popularity of the HST with children of the past, in 2007, Hornby introduced the Pendolino as a modern equivalent. Once again they have been asking what other steam locomotive children might ask for and the answer came back "Tornado" - thanks to all the publicity that this loco has received since its construction.

The new model of the 'new-build' Tornado, which includes all the features that make it different from members of the original class (lipped chimney, correct axle boxes etc.) has a 3-pole motor and flywheel in the loco. Note that the model has some detail missing and has simplified lining, but the brake rods and bufferbeam detail is provided for the purchaser to attach.

Although this has been produced principally in the RailRoad range, it was designed so that an upgraded version could also be produced for the main range. That version, in fully lined British Railways Doncaster green and with extra detail, has not been received for review. A1 Tornado BRb.JPG (50140 bytes)

However, a third version has and this is also for the main model range and has the locomotive in BR Brunswick Green livery with early decals. It is sold in the 'Tornado Express' train pack and comes with three maroon Mk1 coaches. These are 1st/2nd composite M15667, 1st/2nd composite M15452 and brake 3rd E34393. This model has a fully lined livery.

The models are DCC ready.

It would appear from coding on the boxes that, although the models were made in China, they are not a product of Sanda Kan. Is this the first major model (with the exception of Skaledale and Liddle End) to come from a different manufacturer since production moved to China and can we expect further diversification of the production of Hornby models in the future?
