Hornby 7-plank Wagons
The 7-plank wagon currently in use by Hornby is the former Airfix model which was first released in 1978. Since acquiring the tooling, Hornby have produced 44 versions of it. Four newly released examples are illustrated here.
R6518 'Shelton Iron, Steel & Coal Co. Ltd' - This company was based at Etruria in
Stafordshire and its products were transported over the North Staffordshire Railway which
became part of the LMS network in 1923. The wagon is maroon and numbered 1836.
R6517 'The Goldendale Iron Company' - This company was based in Stoke-on-Trent and the wagons were kept on a siding on the North Staffordshire Railway at Chatterley. The wagon is grey, with black ironwork, and has lettering in white, shaded black. It is numbered 598.
R6513 'City of Birmingham' - This wagon would have taken coal to the City of Birmingham
gas works at Saltley, north-east of the city centre. The wagon is painted in maroon and
numbered 1225. It has non-shaded white lettering and black ironwork.
R6516 'Bullcroft Main Collieries Ltd' - Their wagons were quite distinctive as they has a large white bull painted on both sides. The wagon is maroon with black ironwork, numbered 757 and the lettering is white, shaded black.
