Lord & Butler of Cardiff have commissioned their second set of three Bachmann cement 'Presflo' wagons. These are all in BR brown, branded 'CEMENT' and individually numbered B873083, B873091 and B887860. This second set (38-270X) is a limited edition of 512 pieces. Once again, Lord & Butler offer a weathering service. The shop is at 8 Wyndham Crescent, Canton, Cardiff CF11 9EH and their phone number is 02620 667 227.

The first 'Presflo' appeared in 1953 and those that followed were for the bulk handling of cement. They were loaded through two top hatches and unloaded under pressure - thus the strengthened sides. Some 'Presflo' wagons were modified for salt traffic and later slate powder traffic and eventually carried fly-ash. B Presflo Cement B873083.jpg (54311 bytes)

In 1960, Associated Portland Cement ordered their own fleet of this type of 'Presflo' from Butterley Engineering and Metro-Cammell Ltd. These were to the same design as the BR wagons. They were initially painted yellow but, to hide the cement deposits, they were repainted in grey. Tunnel Cement was another company that ordered a batch of their own wagons, as well as hiring from BR. This design of 'Presflo' was replaced from 1984 onwards and all had gone by 1991.

Many batches had been made by or for British Railways between 1955 and 1964 and several variations crept in, some of which Bachmann have included in their tooling. These include either one vacuum cylinder (20T) or two (22T). Other differences will be found in buffers, brake levers, vacuum discharge pipes and some even have an additional notice board on the solebars.
