Iron ore is a heavy material and only small hoppers were required for a 24 ton load. Steel constructed 'Iron Ore' hoppers were used by the LMS and LNER as well as private operators. Those built by BR were similar in design and were built by contractors. Some private owner hoppers passed to the British Iron & Steel Corporation.

The current Blue Riband model replaced the older model in 2002 and here we have an example in BR grey livery as B436549 (37-502B).
