Hornby Barry J Freeman Train Packs
Hornby, exhibiting at the same event where Barry Freeman was working on one of his paintings, realised the potential of basing some train packs on subjects in some of his paintings - and a new series was born. Five subjects were chosen, three to be released in 2010 and two in 2011. Each pack takes the name of the painting on which it is based and contains a large print of the picture ready for mounting and framing. The packs are limited editions each of 1000 pieces and each comes with a numbered certificate. As it turned out, only two of the five packs were ready by December 2010, the rest now scheduled for this year.
'Days of Red & Gold'
R2907 The 'red & gold' referred to in the title of this painting is the LMS livery of the streamlined 'Princess Coronation' Class 4-6-2 6239 City of Chester. This comes with three super-detailed Stanier coaches - all-3rds Nos. 1951 and 1952 and brake 3rd No.5817. The coaches have the silver roofs of pre-war years. Barry Freeman only once saw a streamlined 'Coronation' - that was when he was an eager train spotter in his childhood. It was a sunny afternoon and the image remained in his head and led to the painting of the picture. The picture is set in the Autumn of 1939 and shows City of Chester, with its train, on the long Shap incline.
'
Fireworks at Chilcompton' R2908
This train pack contains non-rebuilt 'West
Country' Class 34042 Dorchester in Brunswick green and with early decals on the
tender. It is accompanied by three Stanier coaches in BR maroon livery - consisting of
all-3rds Nos. M2041 and M2042, with brake 3rd No.M5710. This represents a train on the
Somerset & Dorset Joint Railway, thus the mix of a former SR loco with former LMS
coaches. The picture is set in 1951 when a series of trials were run on the line.
Dorchester, with her train, is seen leaving Chilcompton Tunnel while permanentway staff
wait to cross the line to deal with a grass fire on the opposite side of the cutting.
