Hornby Thompson L1 Class 2-6-4Ts

Following the horrors of the Sevenoaks derailment in 1927, railway companies, with the exception of the LMS, had avoided building 2-6-4Ts. Gresley instead had preferred the 2-6-2 V1/V3 tanks but Thompson, with an eye on LMS successes under Fowler, Stanier and Fairburn, chose a 2-6-4 wheel arrangement for his standard large tank. The first one emerged from the Doncaster works in May 1945 and eventually 100 of them were built, all but one by British Railways. Only four ever carried an LNER number.

The Thompson Class L1 large tank engine, introduced to the Hornby range earlier this year has proved to be popular and four versions have already been released. These are:
