Bachmann 13T LNER High-sided Steel Wagons
In 1945, the LNER started building open wagons with steel bodies. The side doors were
made of either steel or wooden planks. The dimples, seen on the sides and ends of wagons
accommodate rings on the inside of the wagon to which ropes could be tied when securing a
load.
Bachmann modelled three types of LNER steel open
wagon in 2010 and three examples are illustrated here. The first is in LNER grey as
No.278785 (38-329). This has the side doors made of wooden planks (six planks on iron
straps). The other two, B480768 (38-325) and B480215 (38-326) are in BR brown with dimpled
sides, steel doors and brake cylinders below.
