Graham Farish Toad Brake VanGF 20T Toad Brake Van BR grey .JPG (20595 bytes)

The 20 ton 'Toad' brake van changed little in appearance over the years. Second only to the standard BR brake van, it is the most familiar, having been a popular subject with model manufacturers. The vans had a verandah at one end only and no side duckets - a factor which would lead to their early demise with British Railways in the late 1950s. Later versions, which tend to be the subject of models, had a 16' wheelbase. They had mostly restricted use ('RU') branding on their sides. These generally carried the name of the yard to which they were allocated. Our example is 377-375 in GWR dark grey, numbered 68761.
