Graham Farish 8-plank Wagons
In order to carry greater loads, some companies ordered 8-plank wagons instead of
7-planks. These, however, were far less common. As with 7-plank wagons, some 8-planks were
used for coke traffic, which, being lighter than coal, allowed owners to extend the height
of the wagons with two extra planks. Bachmann have made these removable so that the wagon
can resort to an 8-plank coal wagon.
There were no 8-plank wagons in the original Graham Farish range but were added in 2005 when Bachmann were retooling the 5-plank and 7-plank wagons. As with the 7-plank, they produced both end door and fixed end versions. With the examples here, 377-125A Pearce & Partners, Thorne No.740 and 377-126A Ketton Cement No.S89 both have end doors, while the coke wagon, 377-200A Birley No.1610, has a fixed end.
