1E Promotionals Wagons
1E Promotionals, in association with Dapol Ltd, release two private owner wagons each month and recent releases are reviewed here.
H Jones (NR11). This 7-plank Norfolk wagon, operated by coal merchant H. Jones of City Station, Norwich, is mid grey in colour (described as 'slate grey' on the actual wagon with 6" lettering) and carries a coal load. The lettering is white and shaded black.
B Laporte Ltd (BE9).
This Bedfordshire wagon is an 8-plank and carries a white Barytes load. Laporte were
chemical manufacturers in Luton. The wagon is black with non-shaded white lettering and is
in No.55 in the company's fleet. The actual wagon was described as being 'Battleship Grey'
but appears to be very dark from the black and white photograph of it. It was built in
1928 to the 1923 Railway Clearing House specification and was registered with the LMS. It
transported Barytes from mines at Malehurst in Shropshire and the Silverband mine near
Appleby in Cumberland. This was used in the manufacture of Barium compounds.
Ipswich Gas (IP7).
This is a 5-plank wagon in dark brown livery and No.1 in the gas company's fleet. It
carried a 10 ton load of coal and has white lettering shaded black. The coal was turned
into house gas and coke.
F D Stigwood (CA6). FD
Stigwood & Son were Cambridgeshire coal merchants based in Duxford and using the yard
at nearby Whittlesford Station. The 7-plank wagon was No.2 in the company's fleet.
Fredrick Drane Stigwood originally worked on his own, delivering coal to houses in the
village of Duxford, which did not have a station or yard - thus the use of the yard at
Whittlesford on the Great Eastern main line. It was unusual for a small coal merchant to
own his own wagon. The business existed in the 1920s and 1930s.
Wolverton Works
(BY13). The model is of an empty mineral wagon painted pale blue (described as Duck Egg
Blue), with the lettering in a golden yellow and almost lost against the light paintwork.
The original wagon was used at the BR Wolverton Works in the 1970s. The model was
originally produced for a Wolverton Works open days which were cancelled.
150 wagons have been produced for 1E Promotionals by Dapol, with each having an individually numbered printed certificate. The wagons are also available from KRS, P.O.
