The first Mk1 coaches went into service in 1951 and remained in use for over forty years. This longevity is a complement to this post-war austerity design which could claim to be the most significant in the history of passenger carrying on Britain's railways.

When production of the standard British Railways coaches started, the existing system of seats being classified as 1st class and 3rd class was continued for a while. Then, in June 1956, 3rd class travel was abolition in Britain. From that time 3rd class became 2nd class and, a lot later - standard class.Mk1 CK B&C M15192.JPG (39140 bytes)

While of a standard design, there was a significant variety of Mk1 types to meet many different needs of the railway regions and Bachmann are unique in tackling so many of these variations in 00 scale ready-to-run models. Seven different types are reviewed here. Those, in crimson & cream are: SO M3741 (39-052E), CK M15192 (39-127C), FK M13060 (39-152C) and BCK M21029 (39-227C). In green we have: SO S3824 (39-053D) and BSK S34641 (39-078D). Finally, in maroon there are: SK W24379 (39-026G) and GUV W86148 (39-271A).Mk1 FK B&C M13060.JPG (38924 bytes)
