Hornby Open Wagons
In 1995, Hornby introduced three different 9ft wheelbase open wagons to represent
earlier designs built on timber frames. The smallest of these was a 3-plank of which 26
versions have been released. Two recent arrivals are a grey LMS engineering wagon (R6489),
identified by a large 'E' on its sides, and a red private owner wagon (R6490), incorrectly
listed as a 4-plank wagon in the Hornby catalogue.
The latter
carries the name 'The Little Mill Brick Co.' and is No7 in the company's fleet. Little
Mill is near Pontypool in Monmouthshire.
Another of the 9ft wheelbase timber frame wagons modelled in 1995 was a 4-plank. This
has now been released in the red livery of Abercriban Quarries Co. (R6492), who were
suppliers of greygrit, limestone macadam, chippings and gravel and were based in
Pontsticill, near Merthyr.
The 5-plank wagon currently in use comes from former Airfix tooling and the latest
release is in the black livery of Thomas Lant (R6491). This company supplied roadstone
from the Llanelwedd Basalt quarries at Buith Wells and the wagon was number 22 in their
fleet.
The 7-plank wagon is another model from former Airfix tooling and a recent release is the black wagon belonging to Bernard T Frost (R6488). This is numbered 31 and the business was located at Witney.
From the same tooling comes Hornby's 'date' wagon for this year R6501. As usual it is in red and carries a large '2010' and the Hornby logo.
