This is a brand new model in the Graham Farish range and five versions of it were planned for the initial release. Our model is in BR black, with late insignia, and numbered '76069'.
It was Riddles' Standard mixed traffic design of 1952 and was based on Ivatt's 'Mucky Duck' LMS 4MT Mogul of 1947. While the design was very close to Ivatt's original, the appearance of the loco was more attractive, having the aesthetically pleasing lines that are common to all of the BR Standard locomotives. This includes the standard cab and chimney. Designed at Doncaster, they were built there and at Horwich. They were found in all regions except the Western.
The class were used on cross-country and secondary route, pulling both freight and passenger trains. Those allocated to the Southern Region had high capacity BR1B tenders, whereas elsewhere they were paired with BR2 and BR2A types. They were gradually replaced by diesel locomotives in the early 1960s and the whole class of 115 locomotives was withdrawn between 1964 and 1967. Four of the class have been preserved. Lined black was carried by all members of the class throughout their lives with British Railways.
