In order to carry greater loads, some companies ordered 8-plank wagons instead of
7-planks. These, however, were far less common. Here are three examples, all still in
their private owner (PO) liveries and in good condition, setting them in a pre-World War 2
period.
The wagons are in the liveries of Great Mountain Collieries Co. of Llanelly and
numbered '980' (377-127A), No.10 in the fleet of coal merchant Osborne & Son
(377-152A) and iron and steel producers Stewarts & Lloyds Ltd (377-150A). The latter
wagon's number is '6301' and, if the wagon survived long enough, it may well have ended up
in the fleet of the British Steel Corporation, formed in 1947
