Between 1924 and 1928, 200 Collett designed heavy freight tanks were built, mostly to work coal trains in the Welsh valleys. They were built at Swindon and gradually replaced older tank engines that had been absorbed by the GWR in 1923. Not all went to Wales as a few were used in the Bristol, West Midlands and London areas.

They were also used on passenger trains and this led to some being given a lined Brunswick green livery in later years. The last was withdrawn from BR service in 1966 and nine have been preserved.

Both tall and short safety valve covers have been modelled by Bachmann. From 2005 this was shown as being 'DCC ready' with an 8-pin socket. The current model is in BR black unlined livery as 5639, with late BR decals on the tank sides.
