Bachmann BR Ventilated Vans
By the early 1950s, British Railways were looking beyond completing wagon orders
inherited from the 'Big Four' and had started to design their own standard wagons which
were needed to replace older stock. The series of vans they developed had much in common with former GWR designs,
but with ideas borrowed from the other three companies. One of these was corrugated steel
end walls which were typical of LMS and LNER vans and the adopting of a single vent at
each end for the ventilated vans. The hinged double doors were typical of the GWR and SR
designs and were easier to open than the sliding doors favoured by the LMS and LNER.
In 2008, Bachmann launched their range of standard BR vans which included a mixture of construction detail including both planked and plywood designs. Here are the three latest releases of standard 12 ton ventilated vans; all are in Bauxite livery. They are: a plank-built 'B760289' (38-161B), a plywood 'B777586' (38-170B) and a late style plywood 'B775719' (38-171B).
