Hornby Mk3 DVTs Mk3 DVT Intercity.jpg (42853 bytes)

Hornby had produced a Mk4 driving van trailer (DVT) in 1991 to go with their model of the Class 91. Since then they have been under pressure to produce a Mk3b version as used on the West Coast Main Line and elsewhere. The model was on last year's list and turned out to be another excellent model.

The real vehicles were part of BR's plan to introduce unit train operation to its InterCity fleet on the WCML. Mk3 DVT Virgin.jpg (44667 bytes)52 of the cars were built between 1988 and 1990 and they greatly increased the efficiency of trains powered by the AC electric locomotives. They were taken over by Virgin Trains and eventually the 'push-pull' trains that used them were replace by 'Pendolinos'. Some of the displaced DVTs found new life with One Anglia on trains between Norwich and Liverpool Street. Others went to the Wrexham & Shropshire operation. So far four have been scrapped and the rest are in storage.
