Hornby Maunsell BR Crimson & Cream
High Window Coaches
While the early BR crimson and cream livery looks fine on certain coaches, such as
Stanier period 3 stock and BR Mk1s, to me, it looks out of place on the Maunsell stock.
This is probably a psychological thing, as those of my age grew up with the livery on
Hornby Dublo Stanier and Gresley coaches and later on BR Mk1 models in the Tri-ang range.
As there were no proprietary Maunsell coach models in use at that time, and following the
initial Hornby released in SR lined olive green and BR plain green, the red and yellow
looks garish. That is not to question its authenticity and correct application.
The backlog of 2009 Maunsell 'high window' stock included seven versions in early BR crimson and cream livery as follows:
R4343A corridor all-3rd S1803S
R4343B corridor all-3rd S838S
R4344B corridor all-1st S7408S
R4346A 6-compartment corridor brake 3rd S3790S
R4346B 6-compartment corridor brake 3rd S3791S
R4348A 6-compartment corridor brake 1st/3rd composite S6643S
R4349B 4-compartment corridor brake 3rd S3731S
