Having taken over most of the freight operation in Britain in the mid 1990s, EWS started replacing former BR wagons with high volume ones that followed US thinking. In 1998, they ordered 300 of these MBAs from Thrall Europa at York. They came in two forms as they run in sets of five, made up of 'outers' with buffers and 'inners' without. Within the sets, the wagons are linked with buckeye couplings. They have been used to carry scrap, timber, stone and coal. Our sample is in EWS livery and numbered 500178.
