Bachmann PO 8-plank Wagon 37-1598-plk William Wood & Sons.jpg (44173 bytes)

In order to carry greater loads, some companies ordered 8-plank wagons instead of 7-planks. These, however, were far less common.

There was no Mainline equivalent tooling to use when Bachmann Branchline was launched in 1990 and so the 8-plank was not added to the Bachmann range until it launched its Blue Riband range in 1998. Bachmann produced two versions - those with fixed ends and those with end doors. The William Wood & Sons wagon No.1006 is a fixed end version.

The model is based on an actual wagon built by Gloucester RC&WCo. in 1919. The condition in which you see it is as it looked in 1922 after a visit to Charles Roberts Ltd for reconditioning. William Wood was a prominent coal factor in Yorkshire and down as far as Birmingham where they supplied the city gas department. The wagon had previously been the property of the Ministry of Munitions.
