The Maunsell range of passenger stock, while late in coming, have proved to be a
resounding success. Six more have been released in the last two months. Three of these are
high window versions in BR crimson and cream livery, which always looks wrong, to
the reviewer, on Southern and Western coaches. Growing up in the
1950s, crimson and cream was usually allocated to Eastern Region models and occasionally
they carried an 'M' number prefix.
Models of Southern Region coaches
were always green and Western Region ones always had to be chocolate and cream. In truth
all regions coaches were crimson and cream for a while.
The three Maunsell review samples in this livery are a 1st/3rd composite numbered
S5663S (R4345B), a 3-compartment brake numbered S3730S (R4349A) and a corridor 1st
numbered S7675S (R4344A).
The other three examples of Maunsell passenger stock are in late Southern Railway green and consist of a 6-compartment brake numbered 2802 (R4339A) and two passenger brake van Cs numbered 763 (R4340A) and 739 (R4340B).
