Judging by the speed with which new versions of the Hornby Class T9 arrive, it must
have been a popular model. The three most recent releases are R2829, which is in Southern
Railway plain black livery and numbered 314, R2830 which is in BR lined black as a mixed
traffic locomotive and numbered 30285 with early BR decals on the tender and, finally,
R2831 which is in the same livery but with later decals and carrying the number 30726. The
early BR version has an 8-wheel tender while the other two have 6-wheeled ones.
The T9s were a Drummond design, built for the London South Western Railway from 1899 until 1901. Just over half were built at the Nine Elms Works and the rest were contracted out to Dubbs & Co. No.314 was a Nine Elms loco built in May 1901 and fitted with a super-heater in April 1922. It was shedded at Fratton when it was withdrawn in May 1951, without receiving a British Railways number.

30285 was another Nine Elms loco and was built in January 1900. It survived through to June 1958 when it was withdrawn from service while shedded at Eastleigh. 30726 was built by Dubbs & Co. in October 1899 and was originally numbered 726 under both LSWR and SR ownership. It passed to British Railways in January 1948 and survived until August 1959. Its last shed was Exmouth Junction.
