Hornby LMS Caledonian Single Train Pack
R2806
Called 'The Last Single Wheeler' the train pack gives us yet another version of that veteran Tri-ang model, the Caledonian Railway '123' Single. This time it is in LMS crimson lake livery with its LMS number, '14010', on the sides of the tender and the LMS roundel on the cabsides. This we have seen before, back in 1983, when the model was released solo limited edition model, in LMS livery, in a special presentation box. However, on that occasion we did not have the Tri-ang Caledonian coaches to go with the loco, but, the year after, the full length GWR clerestory coaches were briefly released in MR maroon livery.
The The Caledonian coaches, however, had been released in LMS livery ten years earlier,
between 1971 and 1973, but they looked awful. The problem at that time was the inability
to print fine lining. In consequence, the coaches were heavily lined in yellow. Now we
have them as they should look and, excusing the simplicity of the molding and the fact
that all but the sides are BR Mk1s, the printed finish is wonderful. It is worth buying
the pack for the coaches.
Fortunately the pack contains three passenger cars (composites '3546' and '3547' and brake coach '6618') but it is a shame that three more were not available in a coach pack. Now that we have later designs of coach for all of the 'Big Four', could there be a market for a set of Caledonian coaches with more accurate detail? After all, the improved GWR 'clerestories' have done well.
Mention needs to be made of the box which, like that for the limited edition model in 1983, has a hinged lid which reveals a window beneath. The inside of the lid has a photo of the actual locomotive in LMS times and with historical notes about it. It is a limited edition of 2000 and comes with an attractively designed numbered certificate.
