Hornby HST Grand Central R2705
We have had the Mk3 coaches in Grand Central black livery and now we have the power units. These, of course, are the new super-detail Class 43 introduced by Hornby last year. The model has a centrally mounted 5-pole skew wound motor connected to both bogies. It is fitted with lights and, as usual, both DCC ready and 'DCC fitted' (has X suffix) versions of each variation have been made. The Grand Central version is the sixth to be produced by Hornby from the new tooling, the HST now being available in six different liveries. The locomotives are numbered '43080' (powered) and '43068' (non-powered).
Grand Central is an 'open access' operator that has run a Sunderland to London service since March 2008. They have three HST sets and the trains run three times a day in each direction. They had originally planned to use Class 222 Meridians but changed to HSTs. New 'Polaris' trains are planned and the company also proposes to expand to other routes.
