Hornby Devon Belle Observation Car
R4377
The models just get better and better. At the annual press launch for the forthcoming new Hornby catalogue, last December, a finished sample of the Devon Belle observation car was passed around the table and all were amazed at the detail it contained, especially internally. However, doubt was cast over the feasibility of the development cost being recovered through sales as it was (and is) a very specialised subject. Was it not of limited interest? Surely there are very few versions in which it can be produced. Hornby remained confident that it would pay its way and the public excitement over this model, so far, seems to confirm that their confidence was fully justified. No doubt the North Wales Land Cruise version will follow as well as the Scottish versions.
They were built in Lincoln in 1921 by Clayton Wagons Ltd, using two ex-LNWR ambulance car underframes from 1918! They were remodelled at Preston Park in 1937 as observation cars with a small kitchen/pantry and refreshment buffet. The seats, as in tavern cars, were tilted at an uncomfortable angle to discourage passengers from staying too long. They were made up of single armchairs and double seat settees. The seats could be swung to any angle, according to the view you wished to enjoy. Only two cars were made and these were '13' and '14'. The model is in the original Pullman livery but as it carries no obvious number, so which car is it?
