Hornby Class 55 (RailRoad) R2879
This is certainly a model that lends itself to the RailRoad range. While the 'Deltics' are popular subjects, buying one for a child could be expensive, especially if he wanted the first in the class, St Paddy, in BR blue livery. The current Bachmann model could set you back £170, but it is a superb model with sound. In comparison, the much less detailed model of 55001 St Paddy in BR blue in the Hornby RailRoad range would cost you just £44, and that is before any retailers' discounts had been applied.
The model started life in 1977 and was Lima's introduction to a new 00 range of models for the British market, after they abandoned British H0. It is usually considered to be one of their poorer models when compared with what followed. Hornby did not have a 'Deltic' in their range and so, like many of the former Lima models, it found a welcoming place with Hornby.
