Hornby SR N15 Sir Valence R2836 &
R2836X
Back in 1976, Hornby produced a model of a 'King Arthur Class' locomotive and gave it the name Sir Dinadan. Although quite well received at the time, despite various compromises in its design, no further members of the class were released. One of the reasons for this is thought to be a decision made at the time for Hornby to 'up their game' in the light of new competition from Airfix and Mainline. Major compromises in design were to be 'a thing of the past' and a whole new range of locomotive models started to appear.
Although only one version of the original model had appeared first time round, when Hornby produced a newly tooled super-detail model of the class in 2007, it unleashes a frenzied burst of model variations, such as we have never seen before. Demand for the excellent model was such that Hornby saw a need to produce many batches of it and, as the policy now was to rename the model with each new batch, we have been offered no fewer than 16 members of the class in just three years.
767 Sir Valence, in Maunsell's Southern Railway olive green, is the most recent addition and, like all locomotives fitted with decoders, there are versions with and without the chip ready fitted. The real locomotive was one of the 'Scotch Arthurs', built 1925 in Glasgow by the North British Locomotive Company. As such, the model has a reshaped and extended cab roof and a standard Urie-pattern 5,000 gallon, 8-wheel bogie tender. This actual member of the class was withdrawn in 1959 after completing over one million miles.
