Hornby Pack of 3 Weathered PO wagons R6449H Triple Set W Hart Hill & Brookman & McKay.JPG (39884 bytes)

Here we have another of Hornby's triple wagon packs which take existing private owner wagons and apply a 'weathered' finish to them. This pack contains 5-plank S. Bookman (numbered '31' and in a 'weathered' pale grey livery), 8-plank end-tipper McKay (numbered '479' in 'weathered' red) and 4-plank The Harts Hill Iron Company Limited (numbered '7' in 'weathered' brown).

We do not know much about S. Brookman other than that the company was based in Bristol and were probably coal merchants. We know that the livery on the Leeds based McKay wagon dates to the late 1920s and was probably painted at the Charles Roberts wagon works where the 8-plank wagon was built. McKay are thought to have supplied both the domestic and industrial markets in the Leeds area. The Hart Hill Iron Company wagon was also used for coal and was one of a very small fleet built around 1912. It is possible that No.7 never existed, but No.6 certainly did, as did Nos. 1 and 2.
