Hornby Pack of 3 Weathered PO Wagons
R6450
Here we have another of Hornby's triple wagon packs which take existing private owner wagons and apply a 'weathered' finish to them. This pack contains 3-plank James Carter & Sons Ltd (asphalt manufacturers at Bellman & Salt Hill Works, Clitheroe). This is numbered '172' and finished in a 'weathered' light grey livery. The pack also contains 6-plank Wallace Spiers & Co. Ltd (numbered '347' and in a 'weathered' yellow and red) and 8-plank end-tipper Coleman's Mustard Works which is numbered '19' and in a 'weathered' yellow and red livery.
The James Carter company seems to date from the mid-1870s when they were principally trading in coal and later in lime and cement and were based at Blackburn. The lime would have been available in the Clitheroe area and by the time of the wagon modelled in this set, this was where the company had relocated to. The wagon, built by Charles Roberts, dates from 1923 and was one of six bought at that time. It would appear that by this time, asphalt was the company's principal product.
The Spiers wagon dates around 1930 and was probably used for trading in domestic coal supplies through nine London depots. In their bright colours, these wagons would have stood out when travelling between London and the Midlands coalfields. Also brightly coloured were the wagons used to bring coal to Colman's mustard works in Norwich. They were in fact 7-plank wagons and had been built in 1901 by Hurst Nelson of Glasgow. There were 20 in all and they were registered with the Great Eastern Railway.
