Hornby Ex-LBSCR Brake Van R6266CH Brake BR Ex LBSC S55908.JPG (28520 bytes)

The former London Brighton & South Coast Railway brake van was modelled by Hornby back in 1980 when the company also released their LBSC Class E2 0-6-0 tank. Since then, ten versions have been released - and here is the eleventh one (and third to be in BR grey livery). This time it is numbered S55908.

This long wheelbase 20 ton van was the final LBSC wagon design to appear before the Grouping in 1923 and 20 had been built at Lancing Works in 1922 and a further 11 in 1923. The model is of one of the final eleven, having its bottom planks covered in steel sheeting. All but two of the brake vans survived into BR ownership but, after 1937, only 14 were in traffic department use, the rest had been rebuilt as ballast brake vans.
