Hornby 8-plank Wagon R6445H 8plk Lunt 724.JPG (35644 bytes)

The Hornby 8-plank wagon is a strange one. It was initially introduced in 1982, in Hargreaves livery, to go with the R515 and R528 operating tipper and conveyor sets being produced at that time (these have recently been reissued as R8132 and R8131 respectively). This is the reason why the wagon has an opening end door and a large catch on one side to hold the door closed when not being tipped. Since 1982 it has carried 14 liveries, some of which have been reissued several times with new running numbers and some have had the catch missing. The current model is in the intricate Lunt livery of grey, black, white and red, and is numbered '724'.

The Lunt Brothers were colliery agents and coal exporters as well as being coke, limestone and lime traders. They had coal depots in London, Manchester, Wolverhampton and Stourbridge and quarries in Ruthin and Denbigh. The livery and running number are based on a 7-plank wagon photographed in the 1920s. The small lettering on the right reads 'Empty to Annesley Colliery Nr. Nottingham LMS Rly.
