Hornby 21T Mineral Wagon R6400A
Here we have another former Airfix wagon, but this time based on a GWR design of the 1930s, many of which were built for locomotive coal transportation. BR continued to construct similar looking wagons after Nationalisation and these are represented by the review model. Indeed, B312249 (the number on the model) was built at Derby in 1962. The TOPS code MDV indicates that it was a type D mineral wagon fitted with vacuum brakes.
The original model dates from 1979 and Airfix made two versions of it. Palitoy produced a further seven versions and, besides selling off surplus Airfix and Mainline examples, it is thought that Dapol manufactured about six versions of their own. As usual, for the highest volume production we have to look to Hornby who have so far produced twelve versions from the tooling.
