Bachmann 5-plank China Clay with hood
33-080A
The 13 ton china clay wagon was one of the very first new models that Bachmann added to the former Mainline range. It arrived in 1991 and was not based on any existing 5-plank model but was completely new tooling. To start with, it was shorter than the existing 5-plank wagon, with the shorter (9ft) wheelbase. It also has large strengthening brackets on either side if the side doors and one end would have opened on the real wagons for end tipping the contents into ships.
This was one built at Swindon in 1960 and carries the number 'B743802'. It was one of the last batch to be made and was fitted for vacuum brakes. The model has an excellently applied 'weathered' finish. The original wagons had been built by the GWR in 1914 but then no more were constructed until 1955 when the original ones needed replacing. The new ones were built to the original dimensions.
