Bachmann BR 12T Vent Vans
The BR standard vans, introduced by Bachmann last year, have been a great addition to
BR early freight model stock. Four types were initially introduced and the varieties of
these four, that Bachmann are committed to, already total 27. The two reviewed here are
the plywood sided ventilated van (38-171A) and plank sided vent van (38-161A). Both have
corrugated ends and are in late bauxite livery with XP codes. The former is numbered
'B758582' and the latter 'B765351'. The planked van is inscribed 'Return to Ipswich ER'.
Over a long period of time, vans gradually replaced open wagons for the transportation of merchandise so that by 1971, vans exceeded open wagons in number on Britain's railways. They were later displaced by long wheelbase air-braked stock.
