Bachmann BR Standard 4MT 2-6-4T
32-351DC
The BR Standard 4MT tanks are very attractive looking locomotives and some will remember the model produced by Meccano Ltd in their Hornby Dublo range in the early 1950s. This proved to be a best seller and it was a logical subject for Bachmann to model. It arrived in 2001 and the new version, reviewed here, is the twelfth produced by them. Numbered 80140, it is in late BR lined black and has a DCC decoder ready fitted. A blanking plug is provided for those who wish to use the loco with DC. Also provided are brake rods, imitation screw-link couplings, brake pipes, two pairs of steps and cylinder drain-cocks.
These large tanks were the British Railways next stage in the development of those built by Fowler, Stanier and Fairburn and used by the LMS. Each of the four types is made by either Hornby or Bachmann. The Standard version arrived on the railways in 1951 and became the most numerous of all the standard tanks. Over a six year period, 155 were built, 130 of them at Brighton. Scrapping took place between 1962 and 1967 but such was their popularity and long survival that 15 have been preserved.
