Bachmann Ivatt 2MT 2-6-2T 31-456
The 2-6-2T was developed at the same time as Ivatt's similar 2MT 2-6-0 tender engine and shared many parts. They were useful as lightweight machines for secondary and minor routes. In terms of the railway steam engine, these were modern machines, introduced after the Second World War and were to influence standard design after the formation of British Railways in 1948.
The Bachmann model dates from 1995 and 20 versions of it have been produced so far - all but two of them in BR livery. Our review model is in lined BR black with late decals and carrying the number '41264'.
Although an LMS design, the building of the class continued after the nationalisation of the railways in January 1948. The real 41264 was built in July 1950, two and a half years later, and so, strictly speaking, was a British Railways locomotive. It continued in service though to the end of 1966 and was not to be one of the four saved for preservation.
