Hornby Class A4s
The A4 has been in the current Hornby range since 1979. The model was
upgraded in 1998 and a completely new super-detailed model arrived in 2004. There is also
a steam version. However, the A4 is particularly remembered as it was a model of Sir
Nigel Gresley that launched the Hornby Dublo system back in September 1938. This year
the modern Hornby company is acknowledging the 70th Anniversary of that earlier system
with a replica model of that first locomotive (R2688).
It uses the 2004 super-detailed A4 model but with valances in place and
with the pre-war running number - 4498. The crowning glory is the box that the model comes
packed in. This is a slendid thing in Dublo light blue with a well illustrated lift-off
lid. Inside there is a blue printed paper which opens out into a decorative numbered
certificate. The model and box are a limited edition of 2008 pieces.
Another A4 that is now in the shops is 60018 Sparrow Hawk (R2721) which is in BR green livery with late BR insignia but no warning flashes. This has a non-corridor tender and a double chimney.
