Model Improvements Poll 2008
By Brian Macdermott
Many thanks to the 138 respondents for 00 and 22 for N. The figure in bold at the start of each improvement suggestion in the following tables is the actual number of votes cast (not percentages).
I think it is important to let the manufacturers know that the Poll was undertaken in the spirit of helpfulness and continuous improvement not complaint. The comments I received support this. Two examples were:
"As a modelling layman, I have been hugely impressed by N gauge improvements in the last three years."
"Everything is great right now."
Speaking with a number of retailers, it seems that many modellers nowadays have great difficulty in thinking of what can be improved we have such a high standard from our main makers. However, the Poll has shown up some highlighted areas, and I hope the manufacturers can put these comments to good use for the benefit of all.
Copies of this full report will be sent to all the major players. The main features will be published in Model Rail magazine, November issue.
Top categories for improvements to OO Steam Locos and Tenders
38 Closer coupling between loco and tender. User adjustable.
13 NEM coupling mounts and couplings. Easy front removal. Kadees. Standard height.
11 Develop fibre optic plug in oil lamps system (headlamps).
10 Supply appropriate Driver/Fireman. Correct uniform. Varied poses.
10 Need sound. Make provision for space.
9 Synchronised smoke (but not to deposit oil over the railway).
Way out in front is the suggestion that there needs to be an improvement with the method of coupling locos to their tenders. My own feeling here is that Bachmanns latest offering with the 0-8-0 G2a really sums the whole thing up well it gives a full range of adjustment from display cabinet tight to Second Radius very simply.
Couplings have long been a source of comment, and here we see respondents clearly wishing for improvement. One said (quote): Kadee couplers are too expensive here in the UK hindering adoption of an excellent product.
Following on the trend for lighting, respondents are seeking working loco headlamps. One that surprised me (but I can see the point) is the request for more Drivers/Firemen in different poses.
Of course, DCC is still on the up and sound and smoke are in the top selection.
One comment that just missed out was "Need better quality assurance". More people commented on this than last year. In fact, I had to send a new loco back today, for poor running, myself. Are things getting worse, or are we just expecting better?
Top categories for improvements to OO Diesels, Electrics, DMUs etc
17 Working internal and external lights. Constant intensity LED. DMU door open lights.
13 Better close coupling. Buckeye noted. Roco also noted. Enable coupling to other DMUs.
12 NEM coupling mounts and couplings. To accept Kadees. Fit to bogies.
7 DC/DCC analogue sound. Cost needs to be reduced (as per USA).
6 User-adjustable headcodes/destination boards. (Heljan noted as good).
6 Driver factory-fitted. More realistic positioning.
Lighting comes to the fore again, with a number of people commenting on the need for constant intensity and DMU door open lights.
Running virtually equal were NEM couplings and the need for better close-coupling. Many commented on the need for couplings on the outer ends of DMUs.
Modellers want to run increasingly realistic trains, and the request for sound and user-adjustable headcodes was clear.
Many said that they would like to see a Driver factory-fitted as it was too difficult to get bodies off locos with todays increasingly fragile models.
Top categories for improvements to OO Coaches, Wagons etc.
28 NEM coupling mounts and couplings. Kadees noted. Standardise coupling height.
23 Corridor connections.
22 Better close coupling.
22 Working internal lighting. Constant intensity LED. Tail lamps on brake coaches/vans.
15 Add seated passengers as standard. In suitable attire.
Still running with the coupling theme, we see the request for closer coupling with good corridor connections, reflecting modellers aspirations for more realistic trains.
Lighting features high up the list again, with the request for working tail lamps.
The need for passengers factory-fitted seems to stem from the fact that coaches now are very fragile and people find it difficult to get the bodies off without damage. Bodies being easier to remove just missed out being in the top selection.
Top categories for improvements for everything else OO
22 Better track (sleeper spacing). Peco noted. Code 75 to give accurate 6ft spacing. Sleepers shortened by the 2.3mm. Adjustable sleeper positioning, flexible point blades. More resilient points. Bullhead rail.
16 Improve exploded diagrams (where bits go, how to dismantle). Also improve instructions. Make available on line.
15 Working semaphore signals. DCC compatible.
15 Improve availability of spares through retailers or direct from makers. Better cost structure.
The need for better track has been raised before I hope Peco pick up the gauntlet here, or someone might just beat them to it!
I recently wrote to Bachmann complimenting them on their improved exploded diagrams. However, it seems that more work needs to be put into this category by makers in general.
Running equal were the need for working signals, and a surprise to me the need for improved availability of spares. Working signals must surely be a commercial winner? Although this might be considered a wish list item for a new product, many people commented that signals currently available simply didnt cut the mustard.
Top categories for improvements to N Steam Locos and Tenders
8 More reliable mechanisms. Slower speed operation. High torque. Smooth starts.
7 Better quality assurance to avoid returns.
4 Improve pick-ups (Farish mentioned).
As I am a British outline OO modeller, I cant specifically comment on these results. They do seem to indicate that quality assurance in this small scale is in need of some improvement. As mentioned in OO, quality assurance only just missed getting into the top categories.
Top categories for improvements to N Diesels, Electrics, DMUs etc
5 Better slow speed operation. High torque. Flywheel drive.
2 Better quality assurance to avoid returns.
2 DCC ready.
2 Realistic bogies and wheels with better bogie/body clearance.
The results for diesels reflect the comments for steam locos.
Top categories for improvements for N Coaches, Wagons etc
20 Closer couplings (NEM cam-type expanding coupler sockets). Less obtrusive.
3 Farish improve BR Mk2E/F and Mk3 (interiors) and Mk4.
2 Provision for interior lights with bogie pick-up (eg Kato).
2 Finer bodywork detail (inc underframe).
Reflecting the comments for OO, N gauge modellers are calling for the greater realism that close coupling conveys. Although I model OO in British outline, I do have some N gauge American Kato and the buckeye couplings on 20ft long trains are very reliable!
