Hornby Fowler 2-6-4T R2738
In the late 1970s, with competition from the Airfix and Mainline systems beginning to bite into their customer base, Hornby decided to meet the challenge and launch a new range of better quality models. One subject that was a serious omission from their fleet was a large tank engine and a Fowler 2-6-4 tank was decided upon. This arrived in 1980 and seven versions of it were produced, one of them with three alternative numbers.
Twenty years later, Hornby were going through another quality revolution and the decision was taken to upgrade the large Fowler tank locomotive. A completely new chassis was built and the new model was released in 2002. To date, nine versions of this have appeared in the catalogues and the latest model is in BR lined black with early insignia on its tanks. The running number is 42315.
