Hornby Class D 0-4-0T R27730-4-0T Class D .jpg (36420 bytes)

Only five members of this class were built in 1907 and were for use in the iron and steel industry in South Wales. They were used to feed blast furnaces with raw material, moved molten metal and take away the finished steel. As they did not have to travel far, there was a low requirement for coal and so the engines had very small bunkers.

In the early 1990s, Hornby were looking for a new subject for an inexpensive tank engine for their 'starter' sets and liked the look of this subject. To get it to fit their 0-4-0 chassis, they had to stretch the body slightly. Since then, around 25 versions of it have been produced. The latest of these is in BRc green as 07.
