In 1948, the newly formed British Railways needed standard colour schemes and a number of experimental liveries were tried. One that was later adopted for mixed traffic locomotives, was gloss black, lined our with red and white and 46252 City of Leicester was one of seven members of the class that carried it briefly during the livery experimental period. The pony truck on this model is fixed and fitted with roller wheels. Alternative flanged wheels are provided. Not seen in the photograph are the additional detail parts provided in a plastic bag. These include brake rods, front steps, a front coupling (not NEM type) and vac pipes.

City of Leicester was built in June 1944 and started life in wartime black. It was a non-streamlined member of the class and had a double chimney from new. Smoke deflectors were fitted the following year. Being already black, the locomotive was a natural choice for the experimental black livery in April 1949. It missed out on the deep Ultramarine blue and went straight into Brunswick green in February 1952 - a colour it retained to the end in May 1963 having completed 1,231,032 miles.
