The Bachmann model of a BR Class 80/09 diesel shunter arrived in the year 2000 and received rave reviews. The real locomotives were introduced in 1953 as a replacement for tank engines previously used for shunting and had the advantage that they were immediately ready for use each morning without having to wait for a fire to get established. Almost 900 of the class were built.
Our model is from this early period when BR diesel locomotives were painted black. It has a flywheel drive 5-pole motor and is easily converted to DCC. From 2005 the models have been 'DCC ready' and have had an improved design of power collector. Our sample model is numbered 13238. The printing is particularly fine and much of the surface detail, such as handrails, ladders and steps, is separately attached. The rear steps come in a bag for the purchaser to fit. The model should soon be available in the shops.
