Hornby BB Sir Eustace Missenden R2692BB BR Malachite Sir Eustice Missenden R2692.jpg (43556 bytes)

The Hornby model of Battle of Britain Class Sir Eustace Missenden - Southern Railway shows the locomotive in a unique commemorative livery. It is in Malachite green with Southern Railway lining, its BR number (34090) on the cabsides and early BR decals on the tender, but its wheels are painted green (instead of black) and the tyres have been picked out with a narrow yellow line. This was the last Southern Railway 'Pacific' locomotive built and the special livery was applied for the naming ceremony to acknowledge the passing of the Southern Railway as a result of Nationalisation. The naming ceremony was held at Waterloo station on 15th February 1949 and the uniqueness extended to the nameplates and coat-of-arms which were unlike those of any others of the class. The only noticeable error with the Hornby rendition is that the tender wheels, while correctly lined in yellow, should have remained black, and not been painted green (according to the RCTS volume Locomotives of the Southern Railway - Part 2 by D.L.Bradley ISBN 0 901115 31 2), however, they look far better green.
